Mort du sida en 1987, laissant derrière lui des centaines d’images profondes des corps qui formaient une communauté culturelle puissante et ultra-créative, on peut dire d’Hujar qu’il était une véritable figure de proue dans le groupe des artistes, musiciens et écrivains de la scène culturelle New York dans les années 1970 et au début des années 80. Admiré par tous pour son intransigeance professionnelle, technicien hors-pair capable de tirer le portrait de William Burroughs, de Susan Sontag, Loulou de la Falaise, de drag queens, d’illustres inconnus comme d’animaux ou de paysages, ses noirs et blancs retranscrivent la folie et la liberté de cette vague de créateurs encore inégalée dont il fut l’un des piliers. Ses images sont belles, inconventionnelles, et empreintes d’une distance émotionnelle qui font d’elles non seulement un témoignage évident de ces années mais aussi des traces d’un monde révolu qui
